Biography

Emma Bush is an English artist, painting to capture fleeting moments in the natural landscape and botanical world.

”I am a botanical artist painting to capture fleeting moments in the natural world, often captured within small still life scenes and larger than life plant portraits. My work draws inspiration from traditional botanical illustration, alongside more contemporary styles of still life painting.

I often find myself working carefully and thoughtfully on one plant subject at a time, fully learning and understanding the intricacies and characteristics of the plant; how its leaves are delicately veined and curiously cut, how its petals curve and move in response to light throughout the day within a vase. The natural forms of plant material cast some of the most interesting shadows in sunlight, which I enjoy capturing in my work.

I am greatly inspired by time spent outside amongst the subjects I paint, both in the garden and in the natural landscape. Living on the edge of the countryside allows me to frequently immerse myself in the natural world. Gardening and volunteering in several private gardens, and in my own, brings to life the subjects I paint, and always fills me with new ideas for work.

I have exhibited my work with various societies and institutions in London including the Society of Botanical Artists and the ROI, as well as having my work on display at Kew Gardens in their Shirley Sherwood Gallery”.
