Rebecca Hardaker is a British contemporary surrealist painter with a fast-growing reputation in the UK art scene for creating unique paintings filled with symbolism and bright, naïve colours.
Updated classical references in some of her pieces, such as figures depicted entering the canvas scene from ‘off stage’ to contribute to the narrative of painting, are telling of her study of Classics. Rebecca completed her artistic education at Sotheby’s and University of the Arts in London and also spent time working in design alongside her artistic practice.
Andre Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto, published in 1924, has been an important reference for her as she found her style and creative focus. She rarely plans or sketches before starting a new work, allowing her pieces to come together in a deliberately subconscious way. The process is fast and intuitive, unencumbered by rules of traditional painting, and accepting of ‘mistakes’. The end product is whimsical and joyful, and rewards closer study as new figures, shapes and storylines emerge for the viewer.
Rebecca has exhibited in several shows in the UK in recent years and has a growing following of private collectors. Unsurprisingly, she has been selected as the ‘Director’s Pick’ for the upcoming The Other Art Fair in London (from 30 June). She also recently had a solo show at the Fitzrovia Gallery, London, and was selected to contribute to the 2022 Jubilee celebrations alongside another 18 artists painting large scale corgi sculptures placed around London.
