Neither Out Far Nor In Deep
The people along the sand
All turn and look one way.
They turn their back on the land.
They look at the sea all day.
As long as it takes to pass
A ship keeps raising its hull;
The wetter ground like glass
Reflects a standing gull.
The land may vary more;
But wherever the truth may be---
The water comes ashore,
And the people look at the sea.
They cannot look out far.
They cannot look in deep.
But when was that ever a bar
To any watch they keep?
Biography
Hannah is a self-taught artist based in North London painting flora, seascapes and landscapes. I work predominantly in oil paint explores the dynamic interplay between texture, light, and form.
”I am deeply inspired by the natural world, particularly the rugged Cornish coastline and the serene Somerset Levels. These landscapes provide a wealth of artistic opportunities, each possessing the essential elements necessary for creative interpretation and expression”.
Her style is semi-abstract, leaning towards expressionism and impressionism rather than realism. This approach allows Hannah to capture the essence and emotional impact of the landscape, focusing on the interplay of colour, light, and texture to convey a sense of place and atmosphere.
“My technique is primarily alla prima as I feel that this approach enables me to capture the immediacy and energy of a scene, recording the basic shapes, tones, and light in a single session. I start by painting the main features of the landscape, seascape or floral piece, then intuitively develop the rest, allowing the painting to evolve naturally and organically. This process is informed and inspired by numerous quick sketches done on location using a variety of mediums, which I then use as inspiration for work in my studio.
Texture is a crucial aspect of my work, providing a tactile dimension that invites viewers to experience the physicality of the landscape. The versatility of oil paint, with its ability to transform into glossy, translucent fluids or thick, impasto layers, allows me to manipulate the medium to convey depth and detail. Wiping away paint to reveal underlying tones or scratching into the paint layer allows me to enhance the illusion of space and highlight different areas of composition.
In my studio, I work with large decorating brushes and palette knives to create broad, expressive strokes. My limited palette of five colours, plus black and white, ensures a cohesive harmony across my works whilst challenging me to explore the full potential of each hue. This restricted palette also allows me to focus on the interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the emotional impact of my landscapes".
